Therefore, in observance of Independence Day, Cook St. Roll-Offs & Recycling will be closed July 4th - 6th.

Here are some fun facts about the Fourth of July and Independence Day:

1. The Revolutionary war had already begun in April 1775 and it wasn't until June 10, 1776 that the Second Continential Congress decided to write the Declaration of Independence. Until then few colonist wanted complete independence. In fact the thireen colonies were trying to compromise with England on taxation without representation, trade restrictions and the quartering of British troops in colonial homes.   
2. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence with the help of four committee members; John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman. However, the actual writing was delegated to Jefferson.
3. The Second Continential adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 2, 1776, but the document was dated, signed and printed in the newspapers on the 4th of July 1776. 
4. John Hancock was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence as the President of the Second Continential Congress.
5. Most of the 56 delegates of the Second Continential Congress that signed the Declaration did so on August 2, 1776. Only John Hancock and Charles Thompson signed on July 4th. 
6. 2.5 Million people are estimated to have lived in the colonies when the declaration was signed.
7. The first organized fireworks display celebrating the Fourth of July began in Philadelphia in 1777.
8. George Washington gave the troops fighting the Revolutionary War double Rum rations to celebrate July 4th, 1778.
9. John Adams in a letter to his wife, Abigail, predicted that the colonists’ independence would be celebrated by future generations as an annual festival with parades and bonfires.
10. The first public celebration of the Fouth of July at the White House took place in 1801, while Thomas Jefferson was president. 
11. Independence Day didn't become a Federal Holiday until 1870!
12. The oldest Fouth of July parade occurs in Bristol, Rhode Island. 
13. The Liberty Bell rings 13 times in honor of the 13 orginal Colonies every 4th of July!
14. Three US Presidents died on the Fourth of July, while only one was born on the day.
15. Americans spend over $1 Billion on fireworks every year!
